## Problem
I found that this is on openqaworker-arm-2, the service failed is "os-autoinst-openvswitch.service":

Manually restarted the service and the service turned out fine. As also there were currently no openQA jobs running I triggered a reboot of the machine to crosscheck if that reproduces the problem.
EDIT: After a reboot now not only os-autoinst-openvswitch.service
fails again but also var-lib-openqa-share.mount
. Might this be related to #73633 ?
It seems like the network has severe problems here as well in being very slow but still there in the end:
> sudo journalctl -b -u var-lib-openqa-share.mount

also here a manual restart of the service helped. Same for
os-autoinst-openvswitch.service
Updated by okurz about 4 years ago
- Related to action #73633: OSD partially unresponsive, triggering 500 responses, spotty response visible in monitoring panels but no alert triggered (yet) added
Updated by okurz about 4 years ago
- Subject changed from [osd-admins][alert] Failed systemd services alert (workers) to [osd-admins][alert] Failed systemd services alert (workers): os-autoinst-openvswitch.service (and var-lib-openqa-share.mount) on openqaworker-arm-2
- Status changed from In Progress to Blocked
I am suspecting that this problem is due to #73633 hence blocking by that
EDIT: As suggested by nsinger I could disable IPv6 completely and crosscheck with echo net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1 > /etc/sysctl.d/poo73633_debugging.conf
. But first I am conducting the experiment to reboot multiple times and see if the machine fails to come up. For this I have paused the alerts "[openqa] openqaworker-arm-2 online (long-time) alert" and "openqaworker-arm-2 offline" and disabled the salt-minion and telegraf and openqa-services on openqaworker-arm-2:
sudo systemctl disable --now salt-minion telegraf openqa-worker.target openqa-worker-cacheservice openqa-worker-cacheservice-minion
Then rebooted (got stuck in initial BIOS, had to exit manually and continue), but then reproduced the problem in both services over multiple reboots. That makes 4/4 failures.
I found in journalctl
searching for "(var-lib-openqa-share|IPv6)":
Oct 21 11:31:29 openqaworker-arm-2 kernel: Booting Linux on physical CPU 0x0000000000 [0x431f0a11]

…
Oct 21 11:35:01 openqaworker-arm-2 kernel: IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth1: link becomes ready
so it takes 90s before the service var-lib-openqa-share.mount
is aborted and only 4m after boot there is IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth1: link becomes ready
.
Disabled IPv6 now and triggered reboot. But that showed the same problem and additionally failed postfix. Did sudo rm /etc/sysctl.d/poo00000_debugging.conf
. Comparing how long it takes for "eth1" to come up I checked with sudo journalctl --since="2020-10-14" | grep '\(Booting Linux\|eth1.*[lL]ink\)'
looking for "eth1" I found:
sudo journalctl --since="2020-10-14" | grep '\(Booting Linux\|eth1.*[lL]ink\)'

so I see in the past, Oct 18 and before a time of around 60s from bootup to the time when the link becomes ready but no problem with IPv6 but a significant time increase starting Oct 21 (there was no reboot in between). Now it takes 3-8m.
EDIT: I ran the same lookup against all machines within OSD infrastructure. What we got:
okurz@openqa:~> sudo salt \* cmd.run "sudo journalctl --since='2020-10-14' | grep '\(kernel: Linux version\|eth.*Link is Up\|eth.*link becomes ready\)'"

seems like no other machine rebooted during that time but we see consistent times around 60s (with outliers <120s) between boot and "link up" and "IPv6 link ready".
Created specific ticket I found that the network link-up time has significantly increased on the machine openqaworker-arm-2 since 2020-10-20, likely same on other machines.
I conducted the experiment to reboot multiple times and see if the machine fails to come up with some network reliant services.
I found in journalctl
searching for "(var-lib-openqa-share|IPv6)":
Oct 21 11:31:29 openqaworker-arm-2 kernel: Booting Linux on physical CPU 0x0000000000 [0x431f0a11]

so it takes 90s before the service var-lib-openqa-share.mount
is aborted and only 4m after boot there is IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth1: link becomes ready
.
Disabled IPv6 now and triggered reboot. But that showed the same problem.

I ran the same lookup against all machines within OSD infrastructure.

Possibly related to https://infra.nue.suse.com/SelfService/Display.html?id=178694

The machine crashed again and caused failed systemd service alerts again. To prevent that I paused the alert for now and added retry on the systemd services:
sudo systemctl edit os-autoinst-openvswitch.service
[Service]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=1m
and
sudo systemctl edit var-lib-openqa-share.mount
[Mount]
TimeoutSec=600s
and rebooted. This should be removed again if the EngInfra problem was resolved.
EDIT: The retry on os-autoinst-openvswitch.service seems to work but not for var-lib-openqa-share.mount . In the meantime I have seen the same problem on other hosts, e.g. openqaworker-arm-1. Only other ideas for a better workaround would be to change the "Before=" and "After=" entries but I don't know to what.

Same problem happens on openqaworker8 now. Following #73633#note-8 I disabled IPv6 on openqaworker8 which causes postfix to fail so I temporarily disabled that service with systemctl disable --now postfix
. However, also after reboot, var-lib-openqa-share.mount
still fails.
After we fix the problems we should ensure to re-enable postfix again.
Now I tried on openqaworker8 for further workarounds and any timeout or retry changes in /etc/fstab to no avail. Researched further and found https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/4468 about a rejected systemd feature to have better retry, it has a lengthy discussion, grumpy opinions about systemd, a lot of up- and down-votes and is rejected. Haven't found a good suggestion for workaround. then I tried x-systemd.automount
in /etc/fstab in the hope the mount point would only mount at a later point when tests would actually need it but somehow it still tried to mount immediately.

called a command to restart all failed systemd services as of now:
sudo salt -l error -C 'G@roles:worker' cmd.run 'sudo systemctl --failed --no-legend | sed "s/\s.*//" | sudo xargs --no-run-if-empty systemctl restart'
And to have a persistent workaround I did:
sudo salt -l error -C 'G@roles:worker' cmd.run 'echo -e "#!/bin/sh\nlogger poo#73633 workarounds\nsleep 300; systemctl --failed --no-legend | sed \"s/\s.*//\" | xargs --no-run-if-empty systemctl restart\nexit 0" > /etc/init.d/boot.local && chmod +x /etc/init.d/boot.local && systemctl enable rc-local'
this should restart all failed services after 5 minutes after startup of machines. After the root cause is fixed we should remove this workaround again.

So far we have not proceeded much in the according ticket as I could not convince EngInfra personell to investigate the issue themselves further. I gave more specific suggestions in https://infra.nue.suse.com/SelfService/Display.html?id=178694#txn-2643433 , e.g.:
I suspect problems with the switch, potentially also the DHCP server. If possible I would do the following:
* Connect a test notebook to the switch and check if linkup happens within a reasonable time
* Check for correct DHCP response
* Crosscheck if there are any invalid or bogus DHCP packages received, e.g. using tcpdump or wireshark
* Potentially disconnect all other devices connected to the same switch to rule out bogus DHCP server or any hosts conducting an effective, unintended "DoS" attack
* Maybe it is enough to just "reset" or "power cycle" the corresponding switch(es), potentially restart the involved DHCP server
* Disconnect all connections

wrote in SUSE-IT RC channel: @esujskaja hello, could you help to see that https://infra.nue.suse.com/SelfService/Display.html?id=178694 receives the right priority, please? I marked the ticket with "[openqa][urgent]" and this is actually a big problem for us. I am trying to provide helpful hints as well and be patient but we do not have control over the network infrastructure, your team does. And I would not like to escalate this further (yet).

Trying to answer mmaher in the ticket:
Unfortunately Nick is currently unavailable.
I assumed all machines are affected, so according to
https://infra.nue.suse.com/SelfService/Display.html?id=178694#txn-2636458
we could pick any machine.
For easier investigation I suggest you add your ssh key to
https://gitlab.suse.de/openqa/salt-pillars-openqa/-/blob/master/sshd/users.sls
with a merge request. This would allow you easy ssh access to all our OSD worker machines.
Also fghariani and mcaj are already there.
We have two machines which are not used within our production instance "openqaworker11" and "openqaworker12"
but I just checked on openqaworker12 for times between boot and link-up:

I see a very consistent 70+-2s over the whole time. So this machine did not change at all. I checked in /srv/salt and the state is 2020-05 so rather old.

so a consistent 90+-2s. And /srv/salt shows:

openqaworker-arm-2.suse.de:

powerqaworker-qam-1:
Minion did not return. [Not connected]
the first entry, openqaworker2.suse.de, shows a time between kernel boot and link-up of 1m20s which I think is ok (for a server).
malbec.arch.suse.de shows a situation that was ok still on 2020-10-18, worse on 2020-10-22 and later but on 2020-11-08 ok again. openqaworker-arm-1 shows a time of around 3m but showed 1m20s in #75016#note-3 but only from a single data point.

malbec.arch.suse.de:
Minion did not return. [Not connected]
ERROR: Minions returned with non-zero exit code
also checked on openqaworker-arm-3 which is not currently in salt. It seems all machines have a link-up within 1-2m except for arm machines that take 3-5m which could be an arm specific firmware problem or something else. Likely not high chance that we would solve this over "EngInfra".
I have provided an update in the EngInfra ticket with the explanation that likely the forced power cycle of the network switches in 2020-11 SUSE nbg data center might have mitigated the issue enough.
Checking for currently failing systemd services within OSD I found a lot.

AFter some time has passed we should check again for any failed services and if none left then re-enable the alerts.

There were still lots of failed systemd services: https://stats.openqa-monitor.qa.suse.de/d/KToPYLEWz/failed-systemd-services?orgId=1&editPanel=6&tab=alert&from=now-90d&to=now
One can not tell which services were responsible and hence one can not tell whether they are related to that ticket. Note that there are currently two unrelated failed services:
powerqaworker-qam-1:
logrotate.service loaded failed failed Rotate log files
grenache-1.qa.suse.de:
logrotate.service loaded failed failed Rotate log files

I suggest we work on #89551 first which could be related to some problems on bootup

- Priority changed from Normal to High
I created #89551 for the NFS-specific problem (which occurs independently of os-autoinst-openvswitch.service
).

- Status changed from Workable to Resolved
I haven't seen failing os-autoinst-openvswitch.service
in a while and for var-lib-openqa-share.mount
see https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/89551#change-394019.
