Description

It's recently come to the forum admin staff's attention that the NNTP
server that some use to access the forums at forums.opensuse.org (and
forums.suse.com for that matter) are planned to be shutdown in the near
future.

We have a small but significant group of users who use NNTP as their access
to the forums.

Gertjan suggested that I drop a note to these two groups to see if we could
look at standing up our own INN instances somewhere in the SUSE
infrastructure to take on this role.

We have a gateway that copies messages from NNTP to vBulletin (and vice
versa), so would just need to have a server to manage and host the
messages. I have done some work on maintaining the gateway code, and my
test environment uses INN, so I know the configuration works.

I'm going to be out of town next week with limited access to e-mail
(business trip with evening events), but I'm happy to provide input and
assistance as I am able to.

Hi Jim

technically I see no reason why not, we could easily set up a separate VM (alternatively host an inn instance on an existing one). I think the only hurdle might be finding someone with the time and skills, but if you're up for that yourself, you're good to go.

I'll have to give that some thought. Normally, I'd be inclined to say yes,
but I know what my time load is right now, and feel like I probably
couldn't take on another project. If SUSE wanted to continue to provide
the NNTP service for the SUSE forums (forums.suse.com), this is something
that could be piggybacked onto that.

Let me chat with the other forum staff and see if someone might be
interested in stepping up to take on the care and feeding.

Going to be away for a week, so please keep the issue open until after I
return.

Hi
Just an FYI. We have had advance notice that the nntp servers (openSUSE/SUSE/Microfocus) will be shutdown on/about June 19, 2019.

#4 Updated by hendersj over 2 years ago

Thanks, I got that notice today as well. I've asked the admin group again
if someone wants to help set the NNTP servers up, as I definitely don't
have the time in my schedule to take on another project at this time.

Basically, now that we have finished moving the forums, we only need to add a news-server to the pool. I would vote for setting it up on the forums server. As I am apparently one of very few with experience with inn, maybe I'll do it myself.

Hi Per
Sounds like a good idea, just need to make sure the private forums are password protected ;)

Maybe we don't publish them via nntp at all?

Another question - I see some forums are gated to 'nntp.opensuse.org' and some to 'nntp.suse.com' ?

Hi Per
That's likely a possible solution to not worry about the private ones, Jim, are you good with that?

I would assume the ones gated to nntp.suse.com can be changed?

For an initial implementation, I am - but longer term, I would like to see
them available (NNTP has long been my primary way of accessing the forums,
and having to switch to the web view for the private forums would be pretty
inconvenient - but I understand that's a low-use use case).

What we had done with the old implementation was just changed the password
when someone on staff left and distributed that password to the staff.
IIRC, there was one password for mods, one for global mods, and one for
administrators.

I would assume the ones gated to nntp.suse.com can be changed?

The gateway does support updating the fields, so that would be not a
problem.

Just to mention that we have an initial news (nntp) server running at the same machine as the forum. Not production ready. It is only accessible from the heroes intranet, and has only one "test" group.

Next steps (probably) are:

  • creating/testing the gateway to/from the webforum
  • adding storage partition
  • creating the real groups
