Description

Hi,

We have a number of review bots for factory that run with specific
obs user accounts, such as factory-auto or repochecker. Right now
they use privatre email addresses of those who set them up which is
rather odd. They should be @opensuse.org.
Would it be possible to setup a list like e.g. bots@opensuse.org and
then use addresses like bots+factory-auto@opensuse.org for the
actual bots?

you probably want a mailinglist behind this no?

otherwise it would be just an email alias which points to one or multiple users again. and them i am not sure what mlmmj does with different + things that dont match commands.

Henne: could we use mlmmj for this?

Or we use one list and then point aliases to the list.

Whats the use of different mail addresses if they come out at the same list? Isn't the content of the mail what differentiates them for the subscribers?

BTW what is the content of the mails and is someone reading it? We have a list for automatic mails like cron, yadda yadda, which is admin-auto@opensuse.org. Could that be place you're looking for?

They are not meant to be read permanently. Most of the addresses are
only required for the obs account registration. So someone needs to read
them once to complete the registration.

Not sure what to add. We use several user accounts in obs for various scripts and bots. In order to register users one needs mail addresses. Right now I usually use lnussel+botname@suse.de but that is tied to my account. I'd like to have a neutral one that allows others to administer the bots if needed. For that we need distinct mail addresses. Each bot needs a different one. I don't mind if it's via separate user name, via plus syntax or different sub domain. I don't care whether it's an imap account or a mailinglist. It just need to get the job done :-) The plus syntax has the advantage that it doesn't need an admin to set it up but might be incompatible with certain mailinglist managers.

create an opensuse-bots@opensuse.org ML which allows posting from everyone like admin@opensuse.org

New list created - opensuse-bots@opensuse.org. Posting allowed from "admin+anything@opensuse.org", no archiving.

Thanks! So how do I use it? Ie what would be an example email address for a bot that goes to this list?

To have soemthing sent TO the list, it needs to come from "admin[+anything]@opensuse.org" and be sent to "opensuse-bots@opensuse.org".

That doesn't work then. If I add a mail address for an obs account the mail will have admin+somethin in TO rather than FROM.

abusing admin@opensuse.org for your bots or as from for automated emails is wrong.

Yes, that is what I thought too, that's why I didn't understand how a mailing list would help.
Thinking out loud - how about a shared mailbox? If you use addresses like "bot+@o.o", mails to "bot@o.o" go into one mailbox, which could be shared (I guess there is an IMAP server somewhere for opensuse.org).

I have the feeling that the discussion goes in circles here.

Actions #21

the shared mailbox is the mailinglist. we do not have an imap server for opensuse.org and i dont see the need to set one up if all we want is to multiplex mails to multiple people.

so if you create an account for a bot ... how about you use bot+purpose@opensuse.org?

Ludwig, any update?

Can I remove the opensuse-bots mailing list?

Since it looks like it doesn't solve the problem fine with me. I'm still looking for a solution for the bots though :)
