Description

I'm preparing a mailman setup on a VM "mailman-test". I'm going to need an external IP address, as well as the appropriate DNS updates.

I suggest the external name be "lists6.opensuse.org", to follow tradition :-)
Having IPv4 and IPv6 would be good, but IPv4 will suffice.

On the mailserver, I'd like a mapping added for "opensuse-test77-.*" to be sent to lists6.opensuse.org, that is the test list for now.

Max, Theo suggested I assign this to you.

thanks
Per

i am not sure you really want to put the workload of our mlmmj instance on mailman.

also before you put it public ... do you have an apparmor/selinux profile for mailman?

I am pretty sure I do :-) mlmmj is an archaic, only partially complete piece of software. There is virtually no community and no bugs being fixed.
Our installation is also only semi-complete. I would rather switch to mailman than try to get it right with mlmmj.
Theo mentioned you had your doubts about mailman, to which I replied that "redhat and ubuntu both run all of their lists on mailman. Other lists running mailman are rsync/samba, xapian, roundcube, rrdtools, apparmor, mythtv-users." I don't think there are any real issues with mailman.

I'm not quite that far yet, I just need the external access for testing. As for apparmor, I don't know if there is a mailman profile,
if not I'll write one (like I had to for mlmmj).

I can offer some AppArmor profiles for mailman 2.x - just tell me if you are interested ;-)

and we already brought down mailman internally a few times by having it to handle a few mails too many at the same time.

services should have apparmor before going public for testing. your testing instance need to be protected too.

That's great, I'll check the current status on the system. AFAIK, apparmor wasn't even installed by default.

I guess we have much more traffic than redhat and ubuntu, that's cool - if it turns out mailman has a performance issue, we obviously can't switch, but I suggest we find out first. Switching back and forth between mlmmj@baloo and the mailman test system should be easy enough. (forward mails to baloo).

and you will also make sure that the mails which in the mean time got received by mailman are in mlmmj and vice versa? archives are working and all that jazz?

Thanks Max, that was fast! Now I need someone to add a second network interface to the VM and have it restarted. Theo?

I haven't looked at archiving just yet, but it ought to continue to work. The archive user is "archive@lists4-intern.suse.de", which is delivered to baloo local. I'm guessing I can probably just have archive mails sent to "archive@lists5.opensuse.org", but we'll see. As for re-distributing mails if mailman can't handle the load, let's wait and see if that actually becomes an issue.

Henne stopped that when he switched off the mlmmj archives in 2015 (for most lists).
