closedRejoining openSUSE's Discord server

Description
I joined the official discord server recently. I then left the server. I've tried to rejoin and can't. Username Elemental#7457
Can someone look into this? I've read that discord prevents users rejoining servers they've left. Not sure why that is but can an invite be sent to me in discord?

Hi there,
Discord preventing users that left a given server doesn't sound open and warm like they advertise.
Unless someone got banned. And a quick search around the Internet gave me this article from Jan 2023:
https://jamesmcallisteronline.com/rejoin-discord-server/
So, the first method in this article is through an invite link. openSUSE's invite link is:
Could you try it, please? If it doesn't work, we can try the other methods pointed by the article.

I tried rejoining from within discord by searching for the server in discover but that didn't work. Also tried joining via the .gg link. Neither worked for me.

OK. Something seems off. I'm going to ask an openSUSE Discord moderator to look into this, because unless you got banned, you should be able to rejoin the server as far as I can tell.
By the way, out of curiosity: Do you get any error while trying to rejoin the openSUSE server?
Kind regards,
Luciano

Alright, I got the confirmation that you got banned, actually.
The openSUSE community, like many others, aims to provide a welcoming and warming environment for everybody,
without discrimination. For that it sets a minimum of expectations upon just about everyone that's part of it --or anyone
hoping to be--, regarding how they behave themselves whenever interacting with it. And unfortunately, the way you
conduct(ed) yourself doesn't align with such expectations and goes against our values.
If there's any doubt about what you did to get banned, you can see openSUSE's Code of Conduct[1] for yourself.
Regards,
Luciano

Thanks for your help. I never received any notice or notification of being banned and I never engaged in chat. I did leave the server on my own. The reason I left the is because I never used it and I didn’t think I would in the future. So I’m not sure how I was banned if I never engaged in chat. Can anyone expand on this?

You're welcome. I can expand, yes.
You can mostly blame Discord for the lack of any notice or notification when someone gets banned -- and hopefully that'll change in the future. It seems there are cases it notifies people and others it doesn't. There were two things that led to the ban, even though you didn't interact with other people:
- Your user profile, that per se goes against openSUSE's Code of Conduct; and
- Report(s) of very questionable/troublesome behavior in other server(s).

Luciano

Interesting, thank you for looking into this. I'm still not sure what's going on here because I do recall leaving the server intentionally because I never used it. Maybe I was banned after I left?
My discord profile is empty. I deny behaving in any way contrary to the opensuse rules. That would mean this ban is fraudulent or user error. This points to a concerted effort to bypass discords privacy and safety policies involving cross-server correlation of accounts.
More importantly, how would any possible behavior outside of the opensuse server be corroborated and verified by opensuse discord server admins and moderators? Based on what you've shared it seems as if the ban was based on rumor. Can the details be verified?
Thanks for your help!

Those are good questions, which unfortunately I'm not able to answer since I'm not an openSUSE Discord moderator and rarely use Discord myself. Let's wait for someone else to chime in, who's able to address them.

Originally I believed my issue was technical. I had no idea my discord ban was due to a politicized action by zealous thought police. Now that I know it's because of a radicalized ideologue trying to censor disfavored thoughts I don't see any other official and documented way to raise my concern. I'm happy to litigate this issue with the board or here. Let me know how to contact them if that's your preference.
If this is not an issue intended for this system then why was any action taken or sanctioned originally? Action was taken on the submission of a screenshot and a vague claim with no evidence. I contend that the contents of said screenshot do not violate the code of conduct. I never interacted with anyone on the server and only read the comments and posts. There is no evidence of the second claim; some vague reference to interactions I had on some other unnamed server. Zero evidence of that claim. The original action was taken without the input of the opensSUSE board. What prevents a reversal of this action without their input?
I would contend that whoever took this action on discord is interfering with the normal technical function of the discord infrastructure and needs to be replaced or reprimanded in some way that checks their behavior. Someone having such an irrational, radicalized, knee-jerk reaction to a normal person holding a widely shared opinion and then banning them silently without comment or discussion isn't someone fit or rational enough to serve in that role reliably. Certainly this lack of self-awareness and lack of critical thinking skills is a detriment to the community. Thus, in my view, it is an infrastructure problem.
That action reflects very poorly on openSUSE and by extension SUSE. Poorly enough that it could have significant impact on SUSE financial operations. See John Deere's recent official apology and reversal of similar policies, Tractor Supply's full stop of their related policies and Microsoft's recent shuttering of their DEI department after being exposed for similar policies. I'm not going to judge the entire community based on the actions of this one person, mistakes happen. If action isn't taken to reverse this decision then it tells me that there's a systemic problem, not simply one incompetent individual, which is likely affecting thousands, if not tens of thousands of others, or more.

Feel free to appeal with the openSUSE board, this is not an issue for us (infrastructure admins).

Send an email to board@opensuse.org or create a ticket at https://code.opensuse.org/board/tickets/new_issue to voice the concern. You can mention that the decision was made by me (LCP is enough to identify me)

Your bio states "Woke gender ideology is cancer" and "If you use pronouns in your bio I'm going to assume you're the opposite of what you state".
This violates:
The openSUSE community is dedicated to providing a positive experience for everyone, regardless of such attributes (including, but not limited to):
...
- gender identity
Your bio shows clear, premeditated intent to discriminate against persons who have nominated to identify with a gender of their choice.
As a fellow Discord admin, I would have banned you as well. Feel free to include me in your board complaint as I will happy support hellcp and their decision.

Untrue. I addressed your faux concerns in my public post to the board. Maybe you didn't read the full statement or the cited scientific sources.
My profile violates nothing and isn't discriminatory against anyone. You just don't like my opinion and want to discriminate against me.
How does believing a specific political ideology is cancer discriminate against anyone? It looks like you're saying anyone whose trans has to think like you do. I have to agree with your specific political ideology or can't participate in the OpenSUSE community? That's indoctrination. Anyone in open source should find that kind of bullying anathema.
