Description
Chrome 95 dropped support for FTP: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Chrome-95-Released
Firefox also dropped FTP support: https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2021/04/15/built-in-ftp-implementation-to-be-removed-in-firefox-90/
Does it still make sense to keep the FTP urls in our mirror database, or should we drop them?

- Priority changed from Normal to Low
First thought - lack of browser support for ftp doesn't really have much impact for our mirrors.
Second thought - I don't think any mirror I have created in the last 4-5 years have had ftp support.
I would be tempted to say we can drop the ftp urls, but it's not exactly urgent.

Have removed ftp url from mirror.isoc.org.il, it was inactive anyway.

Uh, there is more involved than just ignoring the ftp urls :-)
a) amend the wiki page(s)
b) notify mirror operators (who had ftp) that we no longer will use ftp
c) optional - announcement? (I doubt if the users care much; but maybe the mirror operators list)

@andriinikitin Is this page about Metalinks still valid at all? https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Metalink
Besides the first paragraph and outdated example all looks good. I am not sure where one can get metalink from software.o.o . Maybe we should replace first paragraph with instructions about hot to obtain metalink: one needs to add .meta4 or .metalink to file's url. (with an example). Or use corresponding link in .mirrorlist view of the file.

Thank you, updated as well.

Any easy database query to find all needed email addresses? :-)
Surely that is a job for Andrii to do. In the old days, "mb show all" and a grep would do :-)
The wiki also needs loads of updates in this respect, but I guess it's all part of the mirrorcache project plan.

Btw, maybe someone ought to get rid of the references to the hotstuff modules?

I don't find any occurrences of "FTP" there.
Me neither, but it is full of all sorts of old outdated crud:
- rcapache2 restart; chkconfig -a apache2
- This example will use the "opensuse-hotstuff-160gb" module below.
- "redirector database" = www.mirrorbrain.org
I'm only saying it could do with a little bit of TLC. (unrelated to this ticket though).

It is true that browsers drop ftp, but other tools like wget, aria2c, probably zypper do support it, so I don't see enough motivation for this and will close this ticket.
(We can still drop ftp, if I missed anything or any other reason. We do want to show rsync urls - it should be easy to manage ftp urls as well).
I did import ftp and rsync links for the mirrors from mirrorbrain DB to the main instance and they are now shown in mirrors.opensuse.org .
I must add instructions to the wiki about how to manage those (in short - people with admin rights can do it in the mirror page, e.g. https://download.opensuse.org/app/server/opensuse.mirror.liquidtelecom.com (needs to be logged in)).
