Looks like all the content gets loaded with javascript :-/ (besides text browsers, this probably also excludes search engines)

Sasi, is this something we can fix in the openSUSE instance, or do we need to open a bugreport upstream (where?)?

Search engines will find their way through threads, but people might not, so this is probably worth fixing. Looking at the site through lynx, it's surprisingly usable for a modern webapp, but lack of descriptions in places makes it hard to understand what's going on (this will be an issue with screen readers especially), so maybe also worth reporting (separately).

Might it be interesting to look into using another - more mature - archiver? hyperkitty has already disenfranchised some of our users, namely those who like to read the archives instead of the lists. (not many, but vocal).

I keep hearing words of praise from less experienced users who finally feel like they can use our mailing list archives, so I doubt that's a solution

As there has not been any further input I am closing this ticket. If the request is still valid it would be great if you'd report it upstream.
