Description

Hello,

I'm just browsing openSUSE Download Mirrors - Tumbleweed web page, look
at 6 Poland mirrors and see broken things:

ICM - Why there is no 'V' tick at 'Tumbleweed repo' column? This site
has complete Tumbleweed mirror, even includes debug and source.

onet - same as above why no 'V' tick at 'Tumbleweed repo' column?

Politechnika Szczecińska - please remove from mirror list. This site
stopped mirroring Suse long time ago. Link is dead. If you go up you
will see Debian/Ubuntu/FreeBSD/CentOS only. No more Suse. No plans for
mirroring Suse in the future.

RPM PBone - rsync link missing - please add:
rsync://ftp.pbone.net/opensuse/

Vectra - bad ftp link - please correct:
bad link: ftp://ftp.vectranet.pl/mirror/opensuse
good link: ftp://ftp.vectranet.pl/opensuse
Why there is no 'V' tick at 'Tumbleweed repo' column? This site has
complete Tumbleweed mirror.

have a nice day,
Zbigniew

This has been the case for a while, I think there is another ticket on the same. I have simply not had the time
to look into it. It is only the webpage that is not generated properly, the mirroring and distribution works
fine.

According to comments, Peter Poeml found them in the rsync log in 2008 and added them.
There is no contact. I'll remove that mirror.

RPM PBone - rsync link missing - please add:
rsync://ftp.pbone.net/opensuse/

Have you agreed this with the operator of that mirror?

Vectra - bad ftp link - please correct:
bad link: ftp://ftp.vectranet.pl/mirror/opensuse
good link: ftp://ftp.vectranet.pl/opensuse

I'll fix that as soon as we have some more space on the database server.

RPM PBone - rsync link missing - please add:
rsync://ftp.pbone.net/opensuse/
Have you agreed this with the operator of that mirror?

How to understand: "Have you agreed this with the operator of that mirror?"
I see rsync entry is empty so I verifed with command:
rsync -v rsync://ftp.pbone.net/opensuse/
that server rsync responds. So it works and is publicly available.
If operator of that mirror would not like to provide this rsync service
to the public it would be simply shutdown or IP filtered on firewall. If
I need to agree with the operator on something let me know what is it -
I will ask for you.

BTW: How to understand stars in 'Priority' column? Some mirrors have
**, some * or *. The more stars the better or the less the better?
Some description on page would be useful

greetings,
Zbigniew

Well, I don't think it would be correct to just go adding services for a mirror, even if they are publicly available.
It would be best to ask the mirror operator first.

The more stars, the higher the priority. By default a mirror has priority 100, but that can be lowered
if the operator requests it.

Hi,

Can SUSE Linux organization use rsync://ftp.pbone.net/opensuse/ link on
SUSE mirror list? PBone is last of Polish SUSE mirrors with rsync link
missing. They do not want to add it without your acceptance.

have a nice day,
Zbigniew

Hi,

the only contact I found is: ftpadmin at pbone net
But message was returned undelivered.
People by registering for Suse mirror provide contact data. Maybe you
will have more luck than me using contact collected by Suse mirror. If
you find any contact to pbone admin let me know - I'll write mail again.

By not adding pbone rsync to mirror list you do more bad than good to
the pbone mirror server:
"Furthermore, we actively monitor content on mirrors, so that we
redirect only to files which actually exists on them. rsync is the most
efficient way to do this; scanning through 300.000 files might take only
a few minutes with it. The second best method, if rsync is not
available, is via FTP, but it is much less efficient (takes considerably
longer and places more load on your server). As last resort, we can fall
back to HTTP, if neither rsync nor FTP is available. But it crawls.
Thus, please do consider adding an rsync module for opensuse content,
which allows for much faster scanning of your server. "
Source: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mirror_infrastructure

As you see by not adding pbone rsync link to mirror list you create
unwanted higher load on pbone server because less efficient ftp scanning
is used.

Hi,

You suggested that rsync://ftp.pbone.net/ may not be public service so
this is the reason not adding it to Suse mirror list.
Below I send you links to web pages where rsync://ftp.pbone.net/ is
publicly listed as official mirror. Hope this will be enough to make you
add rsync link to Suse mirrors. If still not enough let me know - I'll
keep looking for valid admin contact. Missing rsync url is bad for Suse
and pbone because less efficient ftp mirror scan is used - see my
previous post.
