OK, you can't - to summarize:

autoinstlog.txt showed:
starting: /usr/bin/qemu-system-arm ... -append rw root=LABEL=_/ rootwait -device usb-ehci ...

but it was running:
'qemu' '-append' 'rw root=LABEL' '-device' 'usb-ehci'

So the idea of this issue is to quote 'rw root=LABEL' - i.e. all arguments containing white space.
