Description

Motivation

Machines are newly setup or repurposed once in a while. Allowing individual squads to setup hardware themselves can help get things done quicker. However documentation on this process is sparse.

Acceptance Criteria

  • AC1: Members of squads other than QE Tools have access to documentation on how to setup hardware
  • AC2: Setup steps are documented in a way that can be easily looked up and linked to

Suggestions

  • Provide a template with steps to follow to setup new machines
    • How to setup IPMI and the according management web interface
    • Ensure access via QA engineering networks in DE, CZ, BJ
    • DNS hostname and zones
    • Setup of ipxe
    • Integration with OSD / salt / workerconf.sls
    • Jira SD ticket flow
    • Provide a reference test to validate the setup
  • Consider existing Setup guide for new machines
  • Docs for qe infra
  • Ask members of squads for feedback e.g. from QE Virt

What do you guys think we can do to improve? I think existing documentation e.g. https://progress.opensuse.org/projects/openqav3/wiki/#Setup-guide-for-new-machines is already sufficient enough. The question is if people can discover the documentation.

I don't think you are the target audience here to be honest. See AC1 😉

Exactly. That's why I am asking others for feedback. Who had problems finding documentation? Where did they look? And then we can say where they didn't look and maybe link back and forth
