Description

Observation

openQA test failure like this one failed to boot into the installed 15-SP6 Build47.2 system after successful installation.
This is because although choosing to install system onto /dev/sda in Yast, the system is actually installed onto /dev/sdb. So after reboot, the system boots into a broken system on /dev/sda.
I can reproduce this manually on unreal3.qe.nue2.suse.org. Did not find such issue on other machines.

Steps to reproduce

  • Set ipxe boot script with 15-SP6 Build47.2
  • Set boot device to pxe for unreal3
  • Reboot unreal3 to start install

Impact

All tests need to do fresh install failed with unreal3 machine.

Problem

  • Wrong system configuration on unreal3
  • Improper placement of disks on unreal3

Suggestions

  • Check BIOS settings
  • Check storage settings

Workaround

I observed the same behavior in before. I don't see an hardware issue here. Maybe that's actually a product issue worth to report? And you can think of workarounds e.g. install a RAID1 covering both storage devices or disabling boot from the first storage device. Or at best don't rely on the detected order but use the device or filesystem UUID. Only as a last resort we would actually unplug one of the storage devices. I am leaving the choice to you which option to follow and I am standing ready to provide more support on demand

At the moment, I am prone to say it has nothing to do with hardware.
