Mirrorbrain on download.opensuse.org seems doesn't work

Description

Hello! I live in KZ and download it's really slow, but if download
direct from mirror (yandex, for example) it's pretty fast, around 100
mbit/s. So, i think, mirrorbrain (mirrorcache?) doesn't work properly,
because downloading from mirrorcache.opensuse.org and
download.opensuse.org slow too. Opensuse installer doesn't have manual
mirror select, so it's really frustrating for end-users sometimes.

I think mirrorbrain probably works quite well, but maybe we don't have good mirrors for you in Kazakhstan.

Could you post the contents of this: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.3/repo/oss/ARCHIVES.gz.mirrorlist - that will tell me which mirrors you are given by mirrorbrain.

Found 3 mirrors which handle this country (KZ)

Found 20 mirrors in other countries, but same continent (AS)

Found 83 mirrors in other parts of the world

And how we see one of fastest mirror (yandex) is in "Found 83 mirrors in
other parts of the world". Strange.

That does looks odd, all in Germany.

Because there are no mirrors in KZ, I would have expected mirrorbrain to give you one from the same continent.

The Russian and Ukrainian mirrors are listed as being in Europe, not Asia, which is why you are not given any of those.

Yes, I expected mirrors in Europe too be faster for you, but mirrorbrain works on a different idea :-(

Well, I can only confirm - your IP address is correctly located to be in Kazakhstan and when I get another mirrorlist:

http://download.opensuse.org/update/leap/15.3/oss/x86_64/AusweisApp2-1.22.3-lp153.2.3.1.x86_64.rpm.mirrorlist

I also see those same three German mirrors.

Hi,

Download redirector (mirrorbrain and mirrorcache) has no means to calculate download speed on every client's location. And it doesn't try to. Currently its main focus is to find mirrors in country, then on the same continent. It works in most of cases, in other cases a workaround should be implemented until we have better solution.

So, it looks you are trying to install leap 15.3, correct?
Two things to try:

  1. It should be possible to edit repo url during installation - you can try to append ?COUNTRY=ru or specify a mirror's url at that step.
  2. It should be possible to install minimal 15.3 image and afterward adjust download url and perform all the downloads.

Will you able to try one of solutions above? Let us know if you need more detailed instructions with either step.

Andrii, I don't understand why such an issue should appear now, after years and years in operation. Users in Spain have long been in the same situation, no national mirrors. Same for users in Ireland (ie), Latvia (lt) and Iceland (is). Just my EUR0.02.
