Description

Hello,

I am in Australia and I allowed my leap 15.1/LXDE system to update today
via pk-update-icon as I normally do. I know my system is usually
directed to my closest mirrored download server but today I was a bit
shocked to see that I was downloading from
https://l37-193-156-169.novotelecom.ru/ and aborted the update process.

This mirror is not on the list at https://mirrors.opensuse.org/

When I put that Russian address into Firefox it came up with the warning
as shown in the attached PNG screenshot.

Is this Russian mirror a cause of concern?

I am going to fix my repos now to Australian mirror only as per the list
at https://mirrors.opensuse.org/.

Regards,

Chris.

Thanks for the report, Chris. It does look odd, but "l37-193-156-169.novotelecom.ru" is legit - aka "mirror.linux-ia64.org" and it is indeed located in Russia.
The warning is correct, I got the same - there seems to be an issue with the webserver setup, but that is not important for us. The reason you were given this mirror is probably that we don't have very many mirrors over on your side of the world, but it could also be due to poor geolocation. If you can send me the IP-address you normally access from, I can look it up.

Hi,

My current WAN address is 118.208.191.233
https://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/118.208.191.233

I switched my distribution and update repos over to AARNET as that is
the only https secured and functioning mirror. 3FL Online Gaming Network
http://www.3fl.net.au/ and RackCentral
http://static.opensuse.org/www.rackcentral.com.au are dead links.

By the way, can you tell me what the , *, *** priority means as I
can't find any reference to it?

Regards,

Chris.

It looks like there are three-four good mirrors for 15.1, in order of priority:

http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/opensuse/distribution/leap/15.1/

http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/opensuse/distribution/leap/15.1
http://ftp.netspace.net.au/pub/opensuse/distribution/leap/15.1
http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/opensuse/opensuse/distribution/leap/15.1

http://opensuse.mirrors.theom.nz/distribution/leap/15.1/

I switched my distribution and update repos over to AARNET as that is
the only https secured and functioning mirror.

FYI, we don't deal with https in the mirror system at all. Software upgrade required but not available.

3FL Online Gaming Network http://www.3fl.net.au/ and
RackCentral http://www.rackcentral.com.au> are dead links.

Thanks - I've been spending the last 2-3 weeks on tidying up, I'll add those to the list.

Each mirror has a priority, assigned by the mirror operator, default is 100 = ***. Less than 100, less stars.
It's essentially an indicator of how much traffic a mirror can/will accept.

Sorry about the late response, I got sidetracked.
