Few things to consider about aufs approach:
- is aufs maintainable?
- what are the gotchas of this approach?
- can it be done without rewriting everything?

Results:
- aufs looks maintainable, two more patches needed in the kernel, upstream is alive
- gotchas ** if we want to support multiple images/options, we need to somehow communicate with user *** currently the most feasible approach looks like using syslinux boot entries generated during boot ** hard kernel updates
- re-usability ** linuxrc is quite modular, by omitting few modules and replacing them with our own we can achieve the result without much hassle
