Do you know if there is a chance to support github code fences (''') in whatever magic is used to do this?

This magic is https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:GitHub

I'll keep an eye on https://github.com/JeroenDeDauw/GitHub/issues/44 and update the extension when it's fixed.

Status changed from New to Rejected

% Done changed from 0 to 100

As the mentioned issue (https://github.com/JeroenDeDauw/GitHub/issues/44) is still open after more than 2 years, I do not see it happen.

Therefor closing here to get rid of old, unfixable tickets.

Sorry for this - the feature looked indeed very nice.
