We are using a lot of upstream formulas in production. The problem is that neither the upstream formulas nor our salt code is tested, not even a smoke test for syntax errors. So this is what we need:

1) find out how to write syntax tests, ideally without starting master or minion service in the CI container
2) add the tests in our salt code
3) set up a gitlab-ci or jenkins CI project to run the tests against Merge Requests
