Fri Mar 31 00:00:01 2017 mlmmj-maintd: redmine+admin@opensuse.org unsubscribed due to bouncing since Sat Mar 25 01:21:14 2017
redmine+admin@.o.o was unsubscribed again from the admin@o.o mailing list, which resulted in no tickets getting created in redmine. Henne suggested to use the max value of bouncelife tunable

In mlmmj.operation.log, I see three bounces -
Mar 13 due to bouncing since Mar 7
Mar 31 due to bouncing since Mar 25
Apr 9 due to bouncing since Apr 3
The question is more likely to be - why are the mails bouncing?
Updated by pjessen about 7 years ago
Since 01/01/2017, there was one single temporary bounce from mx2.suse.de, everything else was accepted. That means the mails are being bounced by the final recipient - redmine@opensuse.org.
Looking in the logs, I see a few:

I can certainly adjust bouncelife (default 5 days), but why is redmin@opensuse.org bouncing the messages?
Updated by pjessen about 7 years ago
Btw, when a message bounces, mlmmj will send one or more probes to the address, which redmine also bounces.

Unsubscribed again, I have resubscribed. I can't see why the messages are being bounced, but something is clearly wrong @ redmine.

bouncelife was set to a really big value to prevent that. needs to be monitored more. and redmine is rejecting mails for blocked users. which then leads to bounces. we would need to be able to make our MX aware of blocked email addresses in redmine so it can reject them there already. but this isnt an easy task.

Thanks a lot for handling it, I'm closing the ticket. I'll keep an eye on the situation though as well

This is new behaviour?

Yeah, I agree that isn't easy. Maybe redmine could just ignore blocked users?

It is a tunable. see http://mlmmj.org/docs/tunables/ .

Haha, I meant new behaviour from redmine. The first such bounce was mid-March.
Btw, I suspect the problem is that redmine also bounces the mlmmj probes. Every unsubscribe is preceded by a number of probes, which are also being bounced. (see comment#5). I wonder if your new bouncelife might only cause a steady flow of bounces back and forth :-)
Updated by Anonymous almost 7 years ago
no it has been doing that since we set it up. you just didnt see them before i guess.
Updated by pjessen almost 7 years ago
Judging by the logs something changed on or around 8 March 2017. Prior to that, redmine did not bounce the mlmmj probes, which is why there were no unsubscribes. After that, redmine starting bouncing the probes, hence unsubscribe. Adjusting bouncelife has hidden the symptom, but not fixed the cause.

which address sends the bounce probes? ... maybe someone blocked the bounce probe user?
